Castlereagh – Upper Castlereagh War Memorial

The item is a modest war memorial set within the grounds of the former public school. The war memorial to men from local families who served in World War One is a simple marble structure comprising a Classic style detailed stelae on a plinth. The roll of honour faces the road, and the names are engraved in the lower part of the memorial. The placement of the memorial in the grounds of the former school evidently reflects the sense that this was considered the most prominent place within the village and the only publicly owned land. image
