Castlereagh – Landers Inn and Stone Stables Ruins

The site forms part of the grant of 80 acres made to Robert Smith in 1803. In the 1806 muster return the grant was leased by Henry Stockfish with about 9 acres under cultivation. Stockfish is again included in the 1822 muster return, but this entry may refer to another site. The 80 acres were purchased in 1843 by James Landers, who established the Welcome Inn. By 1873, the occupier of this land was William Landers. The 1860 licence return notes William Landers was publican of the Oddfellow’s Inn at Castlereagh, this being one of two licensed hotels in the district (the other was Jesse Upton’s Wheatsheaf Inn). William Landers was a trustee of the Church of England burial ground at Castlereagh in 1882. The Landers family retained ownership until 1885, after which there were several short-term ownerships. image
