Castlereagh – Nepean Park – Homestead, Garden and Trees

Nepean Park is sited on the 140 acre land grant made to William Tonks in 1803. In the muster of 1806, there is no entry for Tonks. The grant was sold to John Palmer in 1810 and subsequently acquired by Samuel Foster in 1815. In 1819, the property was conveyed to John Single. The 1822 muster return states John Single held 240 acres. A statement by Single in 1824 claimed the whole of the 240 acres was cleared, with 100 acres in a high state of cultivation. The two-storey house was constructed around 1823. A successful farmer, Single and his wife Sarah also established gardens, orange grove, orchard, and vineyard. Plants were sourced from William Macarthur at Camden Park. Single was one of the most successful pioneers in the Nepean district, utilising scientific methods in agriculture and animal husbandry. John Single also developed extensive pastoral runs west of the Blue Mountains, and a ford at the back of the property was used to drive stock between the family estates. On Sarah Single’s death in 1868, the property was inherited by the youngest son, Charles Walker Single, who sold it to his brother, Joseph Daniel Single of Minnaville. Joseph gifted the estate to his daughter Isabella on her marriage to Frederick Cork. The Single family ownership ceased in 1911. The Single family were a major benefactor of Christ Church at Castlereagh, erected in 1878. image
