Cranebrook – Kenilworth, dwelling and trees

Completed in 1869 for Forsthye, the house is unique in the area for its historic association as a rural retreat, architectural style, and date of construction. The house is a good example of its type set within grounds with stands of mature trees and lawn, which provide context for the house and which collectively demonstrate rural settlement in the area in the mid-nineteenth century as a place of retreat for the city’s middle classes. The item therefore provides diversity in the range of extant historic structures and provides insight into a little-understood aspect of the area’s historical development. image
