The item is a pair of modest memorials within the Smith Park reserve. The larger of the pair is a war memorial to men from local families who served in the First World War. This is a simple stone cement rendered structure comprising a Classic style detailed pilaster on a plinth of three steps and with a capital. The roll of honour faces the road. The smaller, undated memorial is a pyramidal stone tablet with a cast bronze panel (facing the road) commemorating the foundation of the Castlereagh reserve by Governor Macquarie in 1811. Both memorials are set within a small enclosure fenced in aluminium railing and paved in gravel. Smith Park is levelled open ground with a margin of gum trees. The memorials serve to demarcate the village centre of Castlereagh within a public reserve. The reserve and memorials are evidently historically associated with the former municipal chambers located diagonally opposite. The placement of the memorials in the park reflects the sense that this was considered the most prominent place within the former council area. | ![]() |
